Transition to EYFS

Welcome to Gwladys Street Community Primary and Nursery School ‘Transition to EYFS’ webpage.  We are delighted that you have chosen Gwladys Street for your child’s education.  On this page, you can find information about what life at Gwladys Street is like as well as useful website links.  You will also see photographs and videos of the EYFS learning environments.

Transitioning into Gwladys Street Nursery

At Gwladys Street Community Primary School Nursery, we have three intakes per year. These take place in September, January and April. Children can join our Nursery the term after their third birthday. Please ensure that you contact the school office at admin.office@gwladysstreet.com to put your child’s name down up to one year in advance. Places are limited and we do fill up quickly.

In preparation for starting, Miss Hennessey (EYFS Lead) and another member of the Nursery team will conduct a home visit. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions and let us learn as much about your child as possible before they start. Following this visit, you will be given a one hour settling in visit for you to attend with your child. This is an opportunity for children to visit the learning environment with a familiar adult nearby. Once the settling in session has taken place, we will then discuss with parents whether additional settling in sessions are required. This is undertaken on an individual basis.

Welcome to Reception

Firstly, thank you for selecting Gwladys Street Community Primary and Nursery School for your child’s education. Welcome to the Gwladys Street family, we look forward to working with you for the next seven years! To help the transition to school run as smoothly as possible, we offer a comprehensive settling in process.

This begins with an initial phone call to confirm your school place. We then offer six weekly Stay and Play PEEP themed sessions for children new to Gwladys Street. These are an opportunity for children to become familiar with the learning environment as well as the key adults who will be working in Reception with your child.

A home visit will be conducted by Miss Hennessey (EYFS Lead) and a member of the Reception team to learn about your child’s interests and needs. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions that you may have. We also conduct a visit to your child’s previous nursery or setting to see how they interact within a class environment and to speak about their learning and achievements.

Finally, we hold a parents-only meeting to introduce you to Gwladys Street and explain our expectations and curriculum. This meeting is also attended by the local children’s centre and family hub to provide signposting to the various support services available to your family.
