Phonics: Read Write Inc.

What is Read Write Inc?

Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics complete literacy programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.  The programme is designed for children aged 4-7. However, at Gwladys Street we begin the programme in Nursery and will continue teaching RWI to children beyond the age of 7 if they still need support in their reading.

RWI was developed by Ruth Miskin and more information on this can be found at;

https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/reading-schemes-oxford-levels/read-write-inc-phonics-guide/

How is RWI taught?

Children are assessed every 6 to 8 weeks and are then placed into a group which targets their phonics at an appropriate level.

When your child is a confident reader they will begin to bring home a reading book which will match their current phonics level. This phonics- based reading book will aid application, speed and fluency and so developing speedy reading! Comprehension and decoding skills can also be developed through phonics home reading books by answering comprehension questions.  Please help them to read it daily whist giving them lots of praise.  If you have any questions about RWI or phonics please speak to your class teacher.

Year One Phonics Screening Check.

What is the Year One Phonics Screening Check?

The Year One Phonics Screening Check is a short, statutory assessment which confirms whether children have learnt how to phonetically decode to an appropriate standard. It consists of 40 words; some real and some nonsense (also called alien or psuedo words) which the children must try to decode using the phonics skills they are taught. It also supports in identifying children who need extra support from school to improve their reading skills. These children will be able to retake the phonics check once they are in Year Two.
